As part of our commitment to continuous improvement and equipment reliability, we are seeking engineering co-op students who are eager to apply their knowledge in electrical and mechanical diagnostics, inventory management, and preventative maintenance within a real-world food production environment. This role provides hands-on experience with technical problem-solving, compliance enforcement, and operational efficiency while working alongside experienced technicians and industry professionals.
Position Overview:
The Equipment Inventory & Maintenance Co-op will support the maintenance, troubleshooting, and inventory management of industrial kitchen and food service equipment. The role focuses on electrical, electronic, and mechanical diagnostics, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in an engineering-driven, food service operational setting.
This position also involves collaborating with equipment manufacturers by collecting and reporting performance data on cutting-edge food service technology, some of which is still in the R&D phase.
Key Responsibilities:

Support Equipment Diagnostics & Troubleshooting:
-
Assist in identifying preliminary electronic and electrical faults in industrial food processing and kitchen equipment.

Use multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic tools to assess system performance.

Collect and analyze technical feedback for manufacturers to support R&D improvements.

Assist with Preventative & Emergency Maintenance:
-
Support the development of preventative maintenance schedules for essential food service equipment.

Assist in performing minor onsite repairs to prevent downtime and maintain equipment functionality.

Learn how to dismantle and reassemble heavy-duty food service equipment using proper tools and safety protocols.

Inventory & Equipment Management Support:

Maintain organized records of inventory levels for spare parts and equipment.

Assist in coordinating with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure the availability of replacement components.

Document maintenance logs, troubleshooting reports, and service histories.

Regulatory Compliance & Food Safety Enforcement:
-
Ensure all maintenance activities comply with the City of Surrey’s electrical and building codes.

Maintain food-safe operational practices and support equipment sanitization procedures.

Work in accordance with industry health, safety, and food service regulations.

Required Qualifications:
-
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

Interest in diagnostics, electronics, mechanical systems, and industrial equipment maintenance.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to technical troubleshooting.

Familiarity with multimeters, oscilloscopes, PCB layouts, and electrical components.

Ability to support equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting under supervision.

Knowledge of technical documentation and inventory tracking.

Awareness of City of Surrey electrical and building codes with a willingness to support compliance enforcement.
Preferred Qualifications:

Food Safe Certification (Priority given to certified candidates).

Experience with soldering, wiring, or assembling/disassembling industrial equipment.

Familiarity with industrial kitchen operations or food service equipment.

Strong attention to detail in technical data collection and reporting.
